• About sabine

Fifteen years of expertise in gifted education plus a lifetime of experience in giftedness.

Founder of Hoogbloeier | Keynote Speaker | PhD in Psychology UGent & KU Leuven | Author | Creative Maker | Transforming lives of gifted people

Sabine studied civil architecture and engineering at UGent and worked as an architect-engineer for 20 years. Because her four children turned out to be highly gifted, she got interested in giftedness and completed the ECHA-Specialist in Gifted Education training at the Radboud University of Nijmegen. After starting her own business Hoogbloeier counseling gifted children and their parents and training teachers in gifted education, she got the opportunity to start a PhD in Psychology at UGent and KU Leuven in October 2018.

Sabine's main research interests are in gifted education, motivation, and self-determination. She is particularly interested in issues concerning underachieving gifted students. Sabine is an ECHA-Specialist in Gifted Education and was cooperating in the research valorization of Project TALENT, a research project on the motivation of gifted students in Flanders.

She conducted an intervention study on the effectiveness of a program she developed when she was working with gifted underachieving adolescents in her practice. Sabine’s other research concerns the effectiveness of teaching strategies in motivating gifted students.

    Doctoral project

Unlocking Potential. Enhancing motivation and engagement of cognitively gifted students in regular secondary school settings.

This PhD project has two overarching goals. First, to investigate the role of teacher support (motivational and instructional) in the motivation and engagement of cognitively gifted students, and, second, to investigate how underachieving gifted students' motivation and engagement can be improved using a counseling program.

These aims are addressed in three studies.
Study 1 is a survey study among teachers and students examining perceived teaching strategies and their (perceived) effectiveness in enhancing motivation and engagement for cognitively gifted and typical students.
Study 2 is an intervention study aimed at determining whether a classroom intervention based on Bloom’s taxonomy, first, is effective in supporting teachers to integrate higher level questioning into their lessons, and second, makes a difference for the motivation and engagement of the cognitively gifted students.
Study 3 is a counseling intervention study employing a repeated mixed methods single case design. The intervention is designed for underachieving gifted adolescents and involves one of two modules, based on the Achievement Orientation Model and the Pathways to Underachievement Model. Effects on students’ competence and value beliefs, their motivation and engagement and perceived underachievement will be assessed.

    Project TALENT

Sabine Sypré is currently cooperating in the research valorization of Project TALENT, a research project on motivation of gifted students in Flanders. The goal of this project is to promote learning, motivation and well-being of cognitively gifted students by tailoring education and care to their educational needs as closely as possible. The TALENT project does this by:

    1. To create awareness of the diverse educational and development needs of cognitively strong learners among teachers, counselors and parents.

    2. Support professionals in the development of knowledge and skills to identify and teach / guide / educate cognitively strong learners.
    3. Bringing together and enabling collaboration between the different stakeholders: pupils, parents, teachers, counselors, school administrators, teacher training courses, pedagogical guidance services and CLBs.

Project TALENT is funded by the Fund for Scientific Research (Strategic Basic Research). It is an interuniversity project led by KU Leuven, Ghent University and Antwerp University.

    Hoogbloeier

Sabine Sypré is the founder of Hoogbloeier, a consultancy for the gifted. Starting from chat evenings for parents of gifted children, this has evolved into a center of expertise on giftedness. Hoogbloeier was increasingly asked from all over Flanders for individual guidance of gifted children and adolescents, counseling and training at schools, resulting in an expansion in 2014. Hoogbloeier is still growing with a number of enthusiastic, driven partners. Since October 2018, Sabine has said goodbye to Hoogbloeier, but with great confidence in the future. As of October 2022, Sabine is back working here part-time as training development manager.

  • Inspiration session with Sabine Sypré

Oh no, not another one of those inspiration sessions, right? That word seems like a vacuum cleaner for enthusiasm - it sucks all the energy out of some people. But hey, it doesn't have to be that way at all. In fact, that's exactly what I want to surprise you with. A good session packed with inspiration can totally refresh you and boost your motivation. It's like an energy drink for your mind, with a dose of direction thanks to science-based insights. You'll get a wealth of insights, experiences and helpful tips.

    ...

Every month I like to make time to inspire you. What is such a session about? Basically anything to do with talents, giftedness or my life path. We can be guided by the moment or just plan a specific topic - feel free to share your preferences or interests. It can be a first introduction, or maybe we already know each other and you just want to catch up. Maybe you have dreams or are still searching for what you really want. Or are you just curious?

    Anything is possible.

    ...

I'm happy to reserve an hour to an hour and a half of my time for you, and all I ask is that you come to Ghent and treat me to a cup of coffee (or two 😊). But importantly, please know that this is not a coaching session, therapy or psychological counseling. Just an inspiring conversation. Would you like to meet up? Then fill in your details via the link below and tell us why you would like to meet.
